The world's best sparkling red is a Lambrusco di Sorbara
CSWWC 2026 · London, 29 October
Vecchia Modena Premium 2025 is World Champion Sparkling Red Wine at the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships. The same wine is Regional Champion for Best Lambrusco.
On 29 October at Merchant Taylors' Hall in London, the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships presented their 2026 trophies. Vecchia Modena Premium 2025 was named World Champion Sparkling Red Wine, the highest honour the competition gives a red with bubbles. It also took Best Lambrusco among Italy's Regional Champions.
Founded and chaired by Tom Stevenson, the CSWWC is the international competition devoted entirely to sparkling wine. Champagne, Metodo Classico and sparkling wines from every origin go before the same panel of specialists, who award only Gold and Silver medals. Among every sparkling red in the competition, first place went to a Lambrusco di Sorbara.
For Vecchia Modena Premium Lambrusco di Sorbara Doc, the title returns: it was first won in 2022, with the 2021 vintage in magnum. The bottle reproduces the 1892 original held in the family archive, the oldest surviving bottle of Lambrusco.
"Sorbara is a demanding grape variety, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, and in the glass it gives back all the care it requires," says Tommaso Chiarli, fifth generation of the family and marketing and export manager. "This title confirms Modena's place in the world of great international sparkling wines."
In the glass, a luminous pink; strawberry and undergrowth on the nose; a fresh, savoury, effortless palate. Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC, 11% abv. Serve chilled, at 10–12 °C, with holidays roasts and savory dishes, charcuterie and Modena's best, tortellini in brodo.
